Zebrafish in Action: Tiny fish, big science at the Long Night of Science 2025!

On June 20th, we took visitors behind the scenes of zebrafish research at the Long Night of Science Dresden — and what a night it was! From 5 PM until midnight, the 3rd floor of the CRTD was buzzing with curious minds of all ages. Together with the Ninov group, we joined forces to highlight how zebrafish are driving cutting-edge research at the CRTD.

🔬 Our interactive stations included:

  • Fluorescent Transgenics: glowing zebrafish larvae under the microscope and a look into how we label cells for live imaging

  • Developmental Stages: real-time observation of embryos developing into larvae

  • Adult Zebrafish Diversity: long fin, Casper, AB — the genetics behind the differences

  • Kids Station: hands-on fun comparing zebrafish and human anatomy, plus “egg collecting” games

🎥 A looping video display gave visitors a peek into time-lapse imaging, regeneration, and zebrafish behaviour from our own research.

We had amazing discussions — from CRISPR to neuroregeneration to animal ethics — and loved seeing so many people excited about what these tiny fish can teach us.

👏 Huge thanks to all the volunteers who made it possible — and to everyone who stopped by!
Let’s keep the science flowing. 🧬✨
